Tips for travelling with children

Tim from our Thornbury office recently travelled to the Costa del Sol with his kids and grandkids and wanted to share some tips on how to manage a multi-generational hoiliday.

"Having travelled recently with two infants and a child recently, here's a few pieces of advice:

  • If you are taking your car to the airport, consider the Meet and Greet services offered by parking companies. Whilst it is more expensive the arrangements relieve the hassle of parking yourself and getting on the transfer bus with children and luggage
  • Naturally, the airport check in experience can be a challenge with youngsters but generally the ground crew and airline staff are helpful when needed
  • Most airlines carry pushchairs/buggies free of charge together with a child car seat. The buggies normally can be used until the very last boarding stages and are then taken by the airline to the hold
  • The check in procedure could take a little longer so allow for this in the arrival time at the airport
  • It is possible to buy in advance a back pack cover for a child car seat if you prefer your own child’s seat but the majority of good car hire companies provide seats at a cost but standards and quality can vary a lot
  • It goes without saying: take entertainment like books, games, electronic devices (tablet) to occupy the young ones during the flight plus drinks and snacks although the liquids can only be purchased airside or on the aircraft

A word of advice - don’t be put off of travel with youngsters until they are older. It is best to get them used to travelling as soon as and often as possible. The enjoyment once at your destination is so rewarding and the hassle of travel is soon forgotten.

Finally try not to get stressed if unforeseen complications occur. Stay calm and that will reflect in the child’s behaviour too!"
